Border Patrol Agent shot killed near Minutemen compound in Campo California

SAN DIEGO — An international manhunt is under way after a U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot and killed near Campo on Thursday night while investigating a group of people presumed to have crossed into the country illegally.

He has been identified as Robert Rosas, Homeland Security officials said. He was stationed in Campo.

An agent saw the group sometime between 8:30 and 9 p.m. in the remote and rocky terrain south of state Route 94 off Shockey Truck Trail not far from the border, Border Patrol Agent Daryl Reed said.

He called for other agents, who split up and began to trail the group, Reed said.

About 9:15 p.m., agents, who had lost radio contact with their fellow agent, heard multiple gunshots and rushed to the area, where they found that he had been shot, Reed said.

Officials said Rosas was shot in the head. He died at the scene.

Several agencies responded to the shooting, including the Sheriff’s Department, the FBI and Cal Fire. A large-scale search by land and air was conducted, but no one in the group was found, Reed said.

Mexican authorities were also notified and conducted a search on their side of the border, Reed said. It’s unknown if the group was smuggling humans or drugs or if the people fled back to Mexico or continued traveling inside the United States, Reed said.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said she was deeply saddened by Rosas’ death and issued the following statement: “Agent Robert Rosas was gunned down while protecting our nation’s Southwest border. This act of violence will not stand – nor will any act of violence against the Border Patrol. I have directed that the full resources of the Department assist in the investigation to find and bring to justice those responsible for this inexcusable crime.

“My thoughts and condolences are with Agent Rosas’ family and his fellow agents at this difficult time. I want to commend those in the law enforcement and first responder community in Southern California for so quickly responding to the scene and attempting to save Agent Rosas’ life. His death is a vivid reminder that we are engaged in a serious effort to secure our border and that thousands of Border Patrol agents and other DHS employees risk their lives every single day to protect and defend our nation.”

Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Carlsbad, said the slaying is a wake up call and that is was only matter of time before the violence related to illegals and drugs crossed over the border along with the smugglers.

He cautioned anyone who has taken cheap shots at the agency to remember that the slain agent gave his life for a tough, dangerous and frustrating job.

“This agent died in the service of his country,” Bilbray said. “He is another fallen hero in the battle to address the problems down there.”

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, said the thoughts and prayers of the entire region are with the family and friends of the fallen agent.

“Every day, our nation’s Border Patrol agents stand on the front lines of the effort to keep our country and communities safe. They knowingly put their well-being in harm’s way and in some cases make the ultimate sacrifice. What happened last night was a tragedy and a painful acknowledgment that at any time, our Border Patrol agents may be put into an extraordinary circumstance.

FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said his agency is investigating the killing with the Sheriff’s Department, the Border Patrol and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this agent, however, it was bound to happen, what with armed vigilantes playing Gi Joey on the border, Border Patrol agents such as Nicholas Corbett getting away with cold blooded murder. This in no way justifies this, but it is food for thought. And who’s to say one of the trigger happy border vigilantes isn’t in some way involved? More food for thought!

No, the MM should not have to stop helping the BP guard our borders as long as they stay within our laws. Some have strayed and have broken the law and they should be punished but by no means do all the MM do those things nor do they advocate them in spite of the lyng Dee and other illegal alien sympathizers who try to say so. The MM report ALL illegal traffic to the BP and that would include drug and human trafficers not just migrant workers. Our immigration laws aren't broken but the enforcement of them is and that is what needs addressing, not giving amnesty to millions of law breakers so the next batch will be triple of what we have today, just like in 1986.

My prayers go to the Rosas family. This was truly a very sad loss.

I also pray for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Our immigration policies are broken. The processes are severely backlogged and there currently is no legal way to apply legally without paying off someone or waiting 20 years.

The Minutemen must STOP their vigilante border watches. Human Trafficking must stop.

We need to stop the war the Minutemen have against Mexicans or who they perceive as Mexicans or as they say illeeegals.

The war we should be having is a War against Drugs and Drug Cartels. America is the number 1 user/abuser of drugs in the world. Stop the demand and the Drug Cartels go away. Looks like someone needs to check out the evidence that came out in the trial in PA. For one thing Ramirez wasn't walking with any baby and that is only the tip of the iceberg about the evidence or lack of evidence that came out in the trial. Your "opinon" doesn't count only the evidence does. The white boys were vindicated of first degree murder. Now let's all hear about the biasness of the white jury. It would be predictable.

I think this trial was covered thoroughly by the press. Fortunately, the DOJ is looking into filing Civil Rights charges against these two ass klowns. Perjure testimony by law enforcement and others brought in this verdict.

Nonsense, there were many recent incidents reported in the news. One was in Florida where two legal immigrants where murdered by some nutcase. Then there was the illegal immigrant that had an altercation with some white high school kids and the result was his death in PA. Outrage was expressed in both cases.

I can confidently state that more Americans are killed by illegals in this country than the other way around. 25 a day to be exact and they aren't all white Americans.

These white drunken teenaged jocks starting harassing 25 yo Luis Ramariz, as he was walking with his white girlfriend and their baby, punched and kicked him, witnesses said the teenagers shouted racial epitaths including, “You F´n Spic”, “Go Back to Mexico,” “Tell your Mexican Friends to get out of town.” Mr. Ramirez died in the hospital of fatal trauma to his head. The white teen age football heroes were convicted of "Simple Assault" and sentenced to 6 months in country prison. The value of a man's life.

BP Agent Nicholas Corbett who murdered an illegal immigrant he had apprehended who was on his knees in front of the agent, when the Agent shot him without provocation. Despite eyewitness testimony and forensics evidence proving that Corbett murdered the young man, two juries "hung" and he walked.

BPAUX is a private organization, just like the ELKS, we screen every member and your claims to us being out for $$ is again totally FALSE. If you had the actual guts to come to camp we would show you first hand what we do, but I doubt you would ever get away from your computer and the smearing you wish to place on groups like ours.

I agree with your comment -- it was BOUND TO HAPPEN. 99% of the time, though, it is the other way around. The immigrant is the one who is killed.

I am praying for his family, but I'm starting to feel less sympathetic when roles are reversed.

Where is the outrage when an immigrant is murdered in cold blood? Why do we only hear about these crimes when the victim is white?
