If the National Tea Party Convention hoped to keep its focus on political organizing and its message on limited government, it has had little success so far.

Capping the first full day of the meeting, right-wing instigator Joseph Farah spent much of his dinner speech questioning whether President Obama was born in Hawaii and casting doubt on whether the president was legitimately elected.

“The media, the politicians … all say, no, it’s all been settled. I say, if it’s been settled show us the birth certificate. Simple,” Farah’s said, as his remarks were cheered by the roughly 600 activists gathered in Nashville for the event.

Farah runs WorldNetDaily.com, a conservative conspiracy tabloid, book publisher and tireless critic of the administration.  He dismissed those who say he is obsessed with the birth certificate issue saying, “I admit it, I’m obsessed with the Constitution.” (and making money slandering those he disagrees with)

Farah said he believed establishing lineage was important for leaders, using Jesus’ genealogical ties to King David as an example. Obama has produced his official Hawaii birth certificate; though those associated with the “birther” movement claim they want to see a copy of the original document issued.

Farah’s comments followed remarks from former Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo on Thursday night in which Tancredo called Obama a “committed socialist ideologue.”

Farah went on to urge tea party activists to think beyond winning congressional elections in November and “take over not only the political institutions, but the cultural institutions, like the press, the entertainment industry, the universities, and yes the churches.”

“Are you ready to engage in a cultural war after we take back Congress?”

“Yes!” the crowd yelled back.

DURING THE NIGHT of August 22, 1791 , a wave of fire engulfed the French West Indies colony of St. Domingue (present-day Haiti), as hundreds of thousands of slaves set fire to plantations, torched cities, and massacred a terrified white population. The slave rebellion that started that night--the most successful slave rebellion in history-- lasted 12 long years. It culminated in the founding of the second independent nation in the Western Hemisphere and its first black-governed republic.

Over the past ten days much has been written about Haiti’s troubled past, the ramifications and causes of it’s crushing poverty and political instability, and the historical role many nations have played in perpetuating it’s suffering.

Of course coupled with these lessons in colonial, and post-colonial geo-political history have been the expected wingnut assertions like those of Pat Robinson about Haiti’s “pack with the devil”

But now, thanks to Mark Krikorian, of the Center for Immigration Studies, a far-right “think tank” opposed to immigration, we get this little tidbit of neo-colonial/white-man’s burden analysis of why Haiti remains the poorest nation in the hemisphere:

Alleged ALIPAC members posing for the cameras before beginning their search for aluminum cans to be turned in so they can donate to Whining Willies last Beg-a-thon. Talk about dedication!Anybody ever wondered what type of people make up our opposition in the debate for immigration reform and the human and civil rights of the undocumented?

Reading the oppositions web sites and silly little press releases gives you a good idea. And the level of intelligence shown in the emails and contacts I receive on this site, puts the educational level somewhere between 4th and 6th grade. Fortunately, although the number for this site is readily available, I don’t get that many calls, thank God.

I bring this up for several reasons.

Dear Mr. Santa Claus,

This is an open letter from William Gheen, president of the Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action CommitteeJim Gilchrist founder of The Minuteman ProjectPeter Brimelow, founder of VDAREMark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration StudiesDan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration ReformRoy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSALou DobbsGlenn BeckSean Hannity,Bill O’ReillyPat Buchanan, the members of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, and most Republicans, along with some Democrats, in the U.S. Senate.

We have just received word from the North Pole that you have been delivering presents to the United States all of these years without adhering to the proper legal immigration procedures.  We ask you, Mr. Claus, the same question we ask of all illegal aliens in America, “What part of ILLEGAL don’t you understand?”  We ask that you cease and desist delivering presents to Americans this very Christmas Eve, or we will be forced to report you to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.  You are infringing upon America’s sovereignty and encouraging law-breaking by flouting a complex immigration system that few people understand.

Anyone who doesn't believe that Gilchrist knows what he says in this statement, only has to see this photo from better days, when Gheen and Gilchrist were buddies. Like many people in the movement, when someone disagrees with Willy, he kicks them to the curb and puts them on his list of enemies. What an amigo

Sometimes, even those of us at opposite ends of the debate can find common ground for agreement. That appears to be the case in this statement issued by Minuteman Project Founder Jim Gilchrist. He acknowledges, and confirms, what we’ve been saying all along, about William Gheen, his organization ALIPAC, and those he associates himself with.

Dear Americans,

Unfortunately, I must agree with the pejorative comments about some organizations involved in the immigration law enforcement advocacy movement. Specifically, organizations like William Gheen’s ALIPAC, his affiliate Brook Young of Immigration Watchdog (now defunct) and Jeff Schwilk’s San Diego Minutemen(SDMM).
