Two days before the primary elections in Arizona where JD Hayworth is badly trailing incumbent Senator John McCain, there’s another new player in the game. Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.
As reported in Pueblo Politics this morning, Jim Deakin is asking whether his opponent JD Hayworth is cozying up to the former Klan leader in a desperate effort to gain a few more points in the polls.
As expected, the Hayworth camp vehemently denies this with Hayworth spokesman Mark Sanders saying the idea that the campaign is colluding in any way with Duke is preposterous. “I have no idea what delusional thoughts are going through Deakin’s head,” he said, adding Hayworth denounces the organization and doesn’t want Duke’s support or endorsement.
Yeah, but where there’s smoke, there has to be a little fire somewhere.
Deakin’s chief of staff Roy Regalado say in response, “This shows just how far the Hayworth campaign will go if they are indeed working with Duke.”
Dukes webpage calls Deakin a “spoiler”, an idea that originated with discredited ALIPAC President William Gheens July 16, “press release” where he claims “John McCain using Deakin as Spoiler against J.D. Hayworth”, a ludicrous idea at best. Gheen then went on a campaign to insist Deakin drop out of the race for the good of the state of Arizona, a suggestion Deakin summarily dismissed. At that point, as is his usual style, Gheen went on the attack against Deakin.
The article posted on David Dukes website is essentially the same message Gheen put out. “Is Jim Deakin a “Spoiler” for John McCain?”
Coincidence? Maybe, but then, I don’t believe in coincidences.
So the ALIPAC connection? This quote from the article on Dukes website.
Right now there’s a big last minute push to remind voters of McCain’s past support of Amnesty and that McCain has a history of lying and simply cannot be trusted. One thing that gave Hayworth a tremendous boost earlier in the primary was when the Minuteman candidate resigned and threw his support behind Hayworth, whom he saw as the only candidate with a chance of beating McCain. If Jim Deakin would drop out and endorse Hayworth, that could easily make the difference in this election.
Right from the playbook of William Gheen who is indeed making a last minute push to scare the hell out of elderly Arizona voters this weekend with his bogus claims of 12 million Hispanic voters, no borders and the end of Arizona and America. They even included the phone number to Deakins office (same as Gheen did) urging readers to call and demand Deakin quit the race and endorse Hayworth.
It appears once again, Gheen and his crony’s will stoop to new depths to get their anti Hispanic message out to naive and apathetic Americans.
And according to Pueblo Politics, this is not the first time the Dukester has made an appearance in the race.
Hayworth used the spectre of Duke to go after Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu after the sheriff went on a pro-white radio program that had once featured Duke as a guest. Hayworth called on McCain to disavow Babeu, who is supporting McCain and who said he didn’t know the focus of the radio show before he agreed to go on.
“David Duke, Paul Babeu, John McCain – certainly the senior senator from Arizona does not want to be at that party,” Hayworth said at the time.
JD Hayworth, former corrupt Congressman, now wants to go to Washington on your dime? No thanks and that is the message the people of Arizona need to send Tuesday.
Deakin spokesman Roy Regalado reiterated that Deakin won’t be getting out and backing either of his challengers. “Neither man is an acceptable choice for the people who wish to gain their freedoms back from the current federal government strangle-hold we now face.”
Good man Deakin. At least he stands by his principles.
And for those expecting a huge turnout for Tuesday’s primary voting, don’t get your hopes up.
State officials are predicting a turnout of 20 percent to 25 percent in Tuesday’s primary elections, which is just about where it has been for the last three party primaries.
Pima County Recorder F. Ann Rodriguez, who originally estimated turnout as high as 50%, sent out a statement Saturday lowering her turnout projection to 28 percent to 34 percent, at most.
Rodriguez dropped her projection based on the low number of early ballots that have been returned.
“For a disappointing and unexplained reason, the return rate is much lower for this election compared to past elections,” she said. She suggested a “growing concern for negative campaigning,” which has dominated several high-profile campaigns, may be to blame.
Matt Benson, a spokesman for the Secretary of State’s Office, said while there were initial expectations of higher interest “given the energy surrounding politics, with the tea parties and the like,” the dramatic horse races predicted on the GOP side in the governor’s and U.S. Senate races didn’t come to fruition.
All of this works in incumbent Senator John McCain’s favor. The efforts of JD Hayworth and his allies at ALIPAC using their fear mongering tactics and outright lies will in the end, spell failure, for both Hayworth and ALIPAC.
That is our prediction and hope. We’ll be watching on Tuesday and reporting as results come in.
