- Jim Deakins 58705 12%
Overall, about what we expected. The good folks in Arizona soundly rejected all the rancor and hate filled smears directed at the incumbent Senator and elected the best man for the job.
And despite claims to the contrary, by Hayworth and his supporters at ALIPAC and distantly, ex Klan leader David Duke, Jim Deakin never played the “spoiler”.
Had Deakin caved in to the calls from the extremists to drop out and throw his support behind Hayworth, McCain would still have come across with 12 point victory.
CNN and the Associate Press called the contest shortly after the polls in Arizona closed.
Later, McCain gave a very gracious victory speech We see McCain returning to his more moderate stance in an effort to work with his opposition for the good of the country.
Hayworth, gave a rambling concession speech, getting in a few jabs at his opponents, understandable though.
No word from Jim Deakins. But there was one other concession speech of the night, by a non candidate which was a vile and nasty as any could imagine.
More on that later.
In State Contests
The one that should be of interest to all of us is the race for Arizona Attorney General. The contest between former School Superintendent Tom Horne and Maricopa County Attorney and Arpaio crony and enabler, Andrew Thomas.
As of this morning, Thomas had lost his lead over Horne with Horne hanging on by a mere 700 or so votes.
Nonetheless, that was enough for Thomas spinmeisters to jump ship early, as recounted here by PNT
Can we finally say sayonara to Sith Lord and former County Attorney Andrew Thomas?
Thomas’s unctuous campaign flack, spin-pimp Jason Rose thinks so. With Thomas’s early lead over state Schools Superintendent Tom Horne in the GOP primary for Attorney General evaporating, Rose tweeted this ice-pick to Thomas’ kidneys:
“The jaguar roars: congrats 2 be in order to a hard fought victory by tom horne [sic].”
Hey, so much for loyalty. Rose must’ve already cashed his check.
Tom Horne seems like a competent gentleman and should make a fine Attorney General for the State of Arizona. Much more so than Thomas, who stood at Arpaio’s beck and call to swear out arrest warrants on county employees and politicians who got on the wrong side of Arpaio.
This proves that Arizonans, like the majority of mainstream Americans, reject the mean spirited pettiness and mudslinging from the extremist special interest groups on both the left and the right and when it matters, does the right thing.
