Two days before the primary elections in Arizona where JD Hayworth is badly trailing incumbent Senator John McCain, there’s another new player in the game. Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

As reported in Pueblo Politics this morning, Jim Deakin is asking whether his opponent JD Hayworth is cozying up to the former Klan leader in a desperate effort to gain a few more points in the polls.

As expected, the Hayworth camp vehemently denies this with Hayworth spokesman Mark Sanders saying the idea that the campaign is colluding in any way with Duke is preposterous. “I have no idea what delusional thoughts are going through Deakin’s head,” he said, adding Hayworth denounces the organization and doesn’t want Duke’s support or endorsement.

Yeah, but where there’s smoke, there has to be a little fire somewhere.

Deakin’s chief of staff Roy Regalado say in response, “This shows just how far the Hayworth campaign will go if they are indeed working with Duke.”

Dukes webpage calls Deakin a “spoiler”, an idea that originated with discredited ALIPAC President William Gheens July 16, “press release” where he claims “John McCain using Deakin as Spoiler against J.D. Hayworth”, a ludicrous idea at best. Gheen then went on a campaign to insist Deakin drop out of the race for the good of the state of Arizona, a suggestion Deakin summarily dismissed. At that point, as is his usual style, Gheen went on the attack against Deakin.
