Ramos & Compean Released to Community Confinement

Featured on February 17th, 2009 12 Comments

Former U.S. border patrol agents and now convicted felons Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were released from prison Tuesday, but will remain in a community confinement program until March 20, U.S. Bureau of Prison officials said.

The two agents had been in prison since 2007. President George W. Bush commuted their sentences before he left office.

Traci Billingsley, bureau of prisons spokeswoman, said Tuesday that the two men are out of prison and under the “supervision of the community corrections office for a period of community confinement.”

Community confinement means the sentenced person has to spend the last phrase of their sentence either in a halfway house or in home confinement.

Dallas criminal defense lawyer Ed Mason, who represented Compean in his appeal, said Tuesday morning that he had not yet talked to Compean but was awaiting his phone call.

“I think he might be on his way to El Paso,” Mason said in a telephone interview. “We haven’t been able to talk to him yet.”

Billingsley said she could not release where the two agents would spend the last month of their sentence, but it is possible they could spend it at home.

Compean had been in the Elkton Federal Prison in Elkton, Ohio. Ramos was at the Phoenix Federal Prison.

The two former agents were convicted of shooting a drug smuggler and then trying to cover it up. Compean was sentenced to 12 years and Ramos to 11 years in prison. Both agents were found guilty of civil-rights violations and discharging a irearm during the act of a crime, an offense that includes a mandatory 10-year sentence.

Not “American Heroes” or “Patriots” but two felons back on the streets of America. At least with these two, we won’t have to worry about a recurrence of their crimes.

Sad to think that people consider two lying cowardly felons “heroes”, but then I guess that is what American society has sunk to.

    • Bretsuaz says:

Anyone who risks their life to protect our borders from criminals such as this drug dealer is a hero in my book and many other Americans.

I have known for a long time that CNN was biased and published slanted versions of events but the biased, BS article that has been published on their website not telling the truth about these officers who were doing their JOBS is the most irresponsible journalism I have ever read and they should be fired. This” poor little immigrant “was nothing more than an Mexican drug running creep who had an extensive record of drug running, and is the one who should be the convicted felon, not these officers. CNN and the liars that they employ to write biased crap should be ashamed to in ANY WAY AT ALL CLAIM TO BE REPORTERS. You are nothing but complete LIARS writing crap for drug running thugs. Go take your drugs and stop pretending in any way to be journalist because you are NOT.

I suggest you read the transcripts and learn the truth, not the bullshit you have been fed by the rabid right xenophobes!

        • Barbara says:

Which transcript s would that be, the ones where the justice department knowingly withheld the truth and LIED to the courts, or the ones that proved the justice department withheld information and lied to the courts. I suggest that you get a real grip on life instead of being such a sheep, and start to educate yourself before making such uneducated, pathetic statements.

          • Advocate says:

i refer to the official transcripts of the trial which the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals used to uphold the conviction of these two cowards with one small exception.

Those are the facts. The only facts. The crap being thrown around by Jerome Corsi and the rest of the rabid right cannot stand up to scrutiny.

I would suggest you educate yourself on the facts. I do not comment unless the facts support my position!

    • Barbara says:

sad to think that this country has come to people like you who persecute officers who do their jobs and work to enforce our immigration and drug smuggling laws. Sad to think that this country is run by people who are drug users and financed by drug money. Sad to think that people like you consider drug runners your heros instead of the officers who are working to protect this country and its borders.

      • Advocate says:

Nobody “presecuted” these two. They were PROSECUTED for their crimes and found guilty by a pro law enforcement jury of their peers.

I have no sympathy for Aldrete-Davilla. He is where he deserves to be.

This could have been avoided if these two buffoons had followed the rules and reported the discharge of their weapons. Then, a month later, when Aldrete_Davilla was found, Ramos and Compeans position would have been rock solid.

There is nothing heroic about back shooting a suspect, lying about it to your superiors and trying to cover up your malfeasance.

I do believe in the rule of law applying to all people, without regard to nationality, legal status or position of authority.

Fortunately, a large number of Border Patrol and other law enforcement in this part of Texas agree with me.

        Get over it!

  2. Bretsuaz says:

Ramos and Compean, you are my heroes. Thank you for doing a great job on the border. I wish you and your family well in the coming years. I suspect that you will have many offers from people that support you and the work you did. You should never have been prosecuted, and the commutation of your sentence supports that.

  3. Jim in Ohio says:

What a travesty this STILL is…

This “President”, now “Mr. Bush” – SHOULD HAVE PARDONED these agents !!!!!!!!!!!

Now they have to go through live as “convicted felons” instead of being able to take their rightful place as defenders-of-the-border-against-US-endangering-drug-smugglers !!

Not only did US Attorney Johnny Sutton suppress the evidence from the trial court that the man shot was a DRUG SMUGGLER, but that after being granted immunity by this self-serving US Attorney, the man UNDER THE PROTECTION OF IMMUNITY – continued to smuggle drugs into the country while the agents were being found “guilty” and sentenced to long prison terms.

Shame, “Mr” Bush – SHAME !!!

    • Advocate says:

They’re lucky they got their sentences commuted.

These two felons knowingly broke the law, first by shooting an unarmed, unknown person in the back when he presented no threat to the agents. Secondly by not reporting the discharge of their weapons as Border Patrol policy dictated.

Then they further compounded the crime by sanitizing the scene and when asked by the supervisor on scene if anything had occurred, they answered in the negative.

Johnny Sutton suppressed no evidence during the trial. Johnny Sutton was not the prosecutor in this case. The prosecution asked for certain irrelevant evidence to not be admitted and the trial judge agreed.

The only points of evidence relevant was did the bullet come out of Aldrete-Davillas ass, and was he the one shot by these two cowards. Nothing more! Illegal entry into the US is a Civil Misdemeanor, not a Capitol Offense, nor does the oath of office for a BP Agent, bestow the right for them to act as Judge, Jury and Executioner.

Ramos and Compeans own actions, and those of their fellow agents, made it impossible for Sutton’s office to establish a chain of evidence between the abandoned van and Aldrete-Davilla. By the time Ramos and Compean came back from the vega and confronted the Supervisor, their actions and words totally destroyed any credibility they had.

Fortunately, Aldrete Davilla is serving a 9.5 year federal sentence for his subsequent activities.

No, it is not shame on Mr Bush. It is shame on you and people like you that choose to believe the fabricated bullshit by Joe Loya, Lou Dobbs, Jerome Corsi and other self serving xenophobes instead of taking the time to read the entire 4000 page trial transcript as I have and form your own opinion.

    • Bretsuaz says:

Jim, while it would have been more appropriate to pardon them, I knew that would never happen. Our government is not serious about protecting our borders and preventing the crime and decay that comes with illegal immigration. I cannot understand why the government is not taking this issue more seriously. As U.S. citizens we should be demanding it.

Atleast, however, they are at home with their families where they belong.
