The Arizona Senate has defeated bills intended to force a Supreme Court ruling against automatic citizenship for U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants. Three other major bills aimed at illegal immigration — one to require hospitals to check legal status of patients, another that would require schools to do the same of its students and an omnibus bill that would strip rights ranging from owning a vehicle to getting a marriage license — also went down in defeat in the state Senate. One can only hope the state of Arizona quickly spirals into bankruptcy and unemployment soars to 50% or more after last nights legislative session gave nativist and racist Senate President Russell Pearce all the anti-Mexican legislation that he has had wet dreams about for years, yet hasn’t been able to get passed. What are we referring to? A slew of anti Mexican legislation designed to penalize anyone in Arizona illegally and in some cases, legally, for breathing while brown.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is out with their new Year in Hate and Extremism 2010 review and it’s an eyeopener for most although not so much for those of us that follow these nativist hate groups. Happy New Year 2011

I’ll take a moment to wish a Happy New Year to all our tens of thousands of visitors who have helped us make Immigration Clearinghouse into what it is and to our thousands of subscribers and donors who motivate us to keep going. I’m not going to waste time doing a “2010 Year in Review”. The year ended with mixed results and we’ll leave it at that. Going into 2011, I’m going to spend more time with friends and family, something I’ve neglected the past year. But there are several things we’re going to be concentrating on.

Border Patrol Agent killed in gunbattle in southern Arizona

A Border Patrol agent from the agency’s swat team was shot and killed Tuesday night in a gunbattle with suspected bandits south of Tucson. Agent Brian A. Terry, 40, was killed when he and fellow agents exchanged fire with a group of five people about 11 p.m. in a remote area west of Rio Rico, said FBI spokeswoman Brenda Nath. Four of the five suspected bandits were in custody Wednesday morning, including one man who was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, said agent Brandon Judd, president of the agents’ union in Arizona, Local 2544. The severity of his injuries is unknown.
