Civil discourse is out the window this political cycle it seems, helped by websites such as ALIPAC, VDARE and other more radical venues, that accuse politicians and our President of treason, sedition and other traitorous conduct. But some take it further.

Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer reports threats against members of Congress were up 300% in the first few months of 2010, a claim backed up by FBI records.

Capitol Police have requested a 54% increase in funding for 2011 to fund travel for dignitary protection officers because of the threats.

In 2009, Capitol Police have responded to 142 suspicious packages compared to 32 in 2008 and conducted 1,808 bomb sweeps compared to 970 the year before.

What are some of the threats being received?

  • Rep. Heath Schuler (D-NC) office received a voice mail from a 70 year old caller. “If you vote for that stimulus package, I’m going to kill you. Simple as that” When FBI agents arrived to arrest the man and asked why he’d made the threat, his reply was, “I was trying to work the political scene.” The suspect had a history of mental illness and a cache of guns in his home.  The suspect was arrested and faces up to 10 years in Federal prison for threatening to kill a federal official.

Others threat of note.

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) was threatened with assassination.

A man left voice mail messages for Stabenow at several of her Michigan offices.

“We’re going to fucking get you. We’re going to fucking get you with a lot of fucking bolt action, like we did RFK, like we did MLK. We know who you are. We’ll get you!”

The FBI tracked those calls to a 54 year old Texas man who lived alone and owned more than 20 guns. His excuse for his actions?

He told officers that he was “really really drunk” when he made the calls and was “venting” after hearing a discussion about the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE and becoming concerned that the government would try to abolish the Sean Hannity Show and the Rush Limbaugh show.  A common concern perpetrated by William Gheen and his followers at ALIPAC.

Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) was threatened with assassination also.

The lawmaker was out walking with his daughter in his hometown in Wisconsin when a black SUV pulled up alongside of them and the driver shouted; “You’ve got a bullseye on you head. You’re gonna die motherfucker!”

The man was arrested for “disorderly conduct”, but the Federal prosecutors decided not to pursue the case after no weapons were found in the man’s home. He was on disability for arthritis and was worried about his ability to support his family.

Senator John Cornyn (R-TX),  Representative Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX) were threatened with “bodily harm”.

Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) was told her throat would be cut.

Representative Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) was told someone would physically “fuck her up”, if she held a town hall meeting in her district.

Though each threat case if different, FBI documents reveal some common characteristics.  The suspects are mostly men who own guns, and several have been treated for mental illness. Most had just undergone some kind of major life stress, such as illness or job loss. All apparently felt the need to blame someone else for their problems instead of taking personal responsibility for their own life. Seems to be a familiar excuse these days.

Cornyn, Rodriguez and First Lady Michelle Obama were threatened by a veteran in a counseling session who said he wanted to “kill everyone who won’t help me”. Police determined he was frustrated because those individuals hadn’t helped him with a retirement claim. He admitted to police he was “taking too many meds to list” for mental health problems, was out of work and on disability

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, an opponent of SB-1070 is under round the clock protection by the Phoenix Police after receiving numerous death threats for his righteous opposition to the new law.
